Your healthcare provider may refer you to a speech-language pathologist (SLP) for a variety of reasons. An SLP assesses and treats voice, swallowing, speech disorders and communication problems. Speech therapy can treat childhood speech disorders or adult speech impairments caused by stroke, brain injury or other conditions.

Yes, a doctor's referral is required for therapy. We require a referral from an otolaryngologist (i.e., ENT). For voice related issues, we require a referral from a laryngologist, an ENT who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of the voice.
The initial evaluation is usually 60 mins long. Once it is completed, you will be provided with a treatment plan to meet your goals. A treatment (follow up) session can last up to 45 minutes. The frequency and number of sessions is determined by your SLP. A session is designed to help achieve your objective in collaboration with your SLP.
SLPs who have an interest in voice care, undergo additional training, mentoring and voice specific courses to provide incisive, current, and research based treatment for voice disorders than most general SLPs. At South Bay Speech Therapy Clinic, our patients with voice disorders are seen by specialized therapists increasing the likelihood of rapid, excellent treatment results.
